Հայտնի է պիթոնների 6 սեռ, 22 տեսակ։ Բուն պիթոնների սեռն ընդգրկում է 7 տեսակ (3-ը տարածված են արևադարձային Աֆրիկայում, 4-ը՝ Հարավային և Հարավ-Արևելյան Ասիայում)։
Սնվում են հիմնականում կաթնասուններով (խոշոր պիթոնները՝ շնագայլերով, ընձառյուծներով, մատղաշ վարազներով և այլն), ինչպես նաև մանր ողնաշարավորներով, երիտասարդ պիթոնները՝ միջատներով։ Երբեմն հարձակվում են մարդուվրա։
